“Alattad a föld, fölötted az ég, benned a létra.
Beneath you is the earth, above you is the sky, within is the ladder.”
The symbol of the phoenix is one of cyclical awakening and rebirth. I explore this theme of rising from the dark ashes of what was to the sunrise radiance of what is to be. This spiritual emergence, the coming into a higher power, is emotionally turbulent yet is ignited by the brilliance of faith. It is the confrontation of light and darkness, with a surging trajectory upwards.
The energy which I feel within is expressed with the bold thick brushstrokes of viscous oil paint. As layers of paint are superposed, and scraped with a palette knife, the work gains a 3 dimensional quality lending a physical depth to this conceptual realm.

Paul Gauguin's artistic exploration of the spiritual world has haunted me since childhood and greatly emboldened the expression of my own spiritual journey. The creative spontaneity and daring aesthetic of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and other abstract expressionists inspire my painting style toward unrestricted brush movement. Having studied and worked with my mentor, bay area artist Cedric Wentworth, who's large-scale paintings traverse the theme of angels in a powerful and unique way, I was continuously challenged to visually communicate an intuitive experience.
When the spirit takes flight.
